How SIP returns are calculated
Each instalment compounds every month from the day it is invested. The value of a SIP is FV = P × ((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i the monthly rate (yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n the number of months.
For example, ₹10,000 a month for 10 years at 12% grows to about ₹23.2 lakh from ₹12 lakh invested.
Mutual fund returns are not guaranteed. The rate you enter is an assumption; real returns go up and down from year to year.
Time matters more than the amount
A ₹5,000 SIP for 20 years at 12% grows to about ₹50 lakh, from ₹12 lakh invested. The same SIP at 7%, roughly what a fixed deposit pays, reaches about ₹26 lakh. Starting early and staying invested is what does the work.
A step-up SIP raises the amount every year. Even a 10% yearly step-up adds a large amount over long periods, because the bigger instalments have many years to compound.
You do not have to keep paying to keep growing. ₹10,000 a month for 10 years at 12% is worth about ₹23.2 lakh when you stop. Leave it invested for 5 more years without adding anything and it grows to about ₹42.2 lakh. Use “Then leave it to grow for” to try it.
How SIP gains are taxed
- Equity funds held over 1 year: gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year are taxed at 12.5%.
- Equity funds sold within 1 year: gains taxed at 20%.
- Debt funds bought after 1 April 2023: gains taxed at your slab rate.
- Each SIP instalment has its own holding period, counted from its own date.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I assume for a SIP?
For diversified equity funds over 10+ years, 10–12% is a reasonable planning figure. For hybrid funds, 8–10%. For debt funds, 6–7.5%. Use a lower figure to be safe.
Can I stop a SIP anytime?
Yes. You can stop or pause most SIPs online without any penalty. ELSS instalments are each locked in for 3 years.
Is SIP better than a lump sum?
A lump sum gains more if markets rise steadily. A SIP spreads your buying over time, so you buy more units when prices fall, and it suits a monthly salary.
What is the minimum SIP amount?
Many funds accept SIPs from ₹100 or ₹500 a month.
