GST rates after GST 2.0

From 22 September 2025, the GST Council replaced the old 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% slabs with a simpler structure. Most items that were at 12% moved to 5%, and most at 28% moved to 18%.

RateWhat it covers
0%Fresh food, milk, health and life insurance for individuals, education and other exempt items
5%Daily essentials: packaged food, soaps, most medicines, low-priced clothes and footwear
18%The standard rate: most goods and services, electronics such as TVs and ACs, small cars
40%A short list of luxury and sin goods, such as aerated drinks and large cars
3%Gold, silver and jewellery (a special rate)

Check the exact rate for your item or service on the CBIC rate finder before you invoice.

How to add and remove GST

  • Add GST: GST = price × rate ÷ 100. A ₹1,000 item at 18% costs ₹1,180.
  • Remove GST: price before GST = price with GST × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). ₹1,180 including 18% GST is ₹1,000 plus ₹180 GST.

Taking 18% off a GST-inclusive price is a common mistake: 18% of ₹1,180 is ₹212, not the ₹180 of tax it actually contains.

CGST, SGST and IGST

For a sale within one state, the GST is split equally between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST, or UTGST in a union territory). At 18%, that is 9% each. For a sale to another state, the whole amount is IGST, collected by the centre.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST slabs in 2026?

0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, plus special rates such as 3% on gold. The 12% and 28% slabs were removed by GST 2.0 on 22 September 2025.

How do I calculate GST from a total amount?

Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For ₹11,800 at 18%: 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 before GST, so the GST is ₹1,800.

Who has to register for GST?

Businesses selling goods with turnover above ₹40 lakh a year, or services above ₹20 lakh. The limits are lower in some states, and some businesses, such as online sellers, must register whatever their turnover.
