Doubling in 115 months works out to 7.5% a year. The period is fixed on the day you buy; certificates bought at other rates mature at other times.
How KVP works
You pay once, and the certificate pays back exactly double on maturity. The time it takes is set by the interest rate on the day you buy: at 7.5% a year, compounded yearly, it is 115 months.
For example, ₹1 lakh put into KVP becomes ₹2 lakh after 9 years 7 months. A bank FD at 7% compounded quarterly, held for the same 115 months, would give about ₹1,94,455.
Certificates bought earlier, at other rates, have other maturity periods, written on the certificate. A later rate change does not alter yours.
KVP rules at a glance
- Invest ₹1,000 or more, in multiples of ₹100. There is no upper limit, and you can hold any number of certificates.
- An adult can buy one alone or jointly with up to two other adults. A guardian can buy one for a minor, and a child aged 10 or more can buy one in their own name.
- It can be cashed early on the holder’s death, on forfeiture by a pledgee, or by a court order. After 2 years and 6 months from opening, it can be closed at a lower value set by the scheme, less than double.
- It can be pledged as security for a loan with a bank, the RBI, a co-operative society, a government company or an approved housing finance company.
How KVP is taxed
KVP has no tax benefit. The amount you invest does not count for 80C, and the interest is taxable at your slab rate.
So after tax, KVP earns about the same as a bank FD at a similar rate. Its draws are the government guarantee and the fixed doubling date. If you want a tax deduction in the old regime, look at NSC or PPF instead.
