How PPF interest works
Interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and added once a year on 31 March. That is why depositing before 5 April earns interest for the whole year. This calculator assumes you do.
₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years at 7.1% grows to about ₹40.7 lakh, from ₹22.5 lakh deposited. Extend for 5 more years and it reaches about ₹66.6 lakh; for 10 more, about ₹1.03 crore.
PPF rules at a glance

- Partial withdrawal is allowed from the 7th year, and loans from the 3rd to the 6th year.
- Deposits count for 80C in the old regime. Interest and maturity are tax-free in both regimes.
