Where your PF money comes from
- You pay 12% of your basic pay and DA, all of it into EPF.
- Your employer also pays 12%. Of that, 8.33% of pay up to ₹25,000 a month (up to ₹2,083) goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), and the rest goes into your EPF.
- Interest is set every year by EPFO. It was 8.25% for FY 2025-26. It is worked out on your monthly balance and added once a year.
The new wage ceiling
From 17 September 2026, the wage ceiling for EPF and EPS went up from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month. More of the employer’s contribution now goes to the pension scheme, and employees earning up to ₹25,000 are now covered compulsorily.
Tax on EPF
- Your own contribution counts for 80C in the old regime.
- Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax-free.
- Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable each year.
Frequently asked questions
What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?
8.25%, the same as the two years before. It was approved by the government in June 2026.
How do I check my EPF balance?
Log in to the EPFO member passbook with your UAN, use the UMANG app, send an SMS to 7738299899, or give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile.
Can I withdraw EPF before retirement?
Yes, partly, for things like a home, education, marriage or illness, and in full if you are out of work for long enough. EPFO simplified these rules in 2025, so check the current conditions on the member portal. Withdrawals within 5 years of service may be taxed.
Does the calculator include my pension?
No. The EPS part builds a monthly pension, not a lump sum, so it is not in this balance.
